Our Commitment to Reproductive Health
At Room One, we support a wide range of community members accessing all kinds of services that relate to reproductive health.
There are few issues we face in our country that cause such impassioned disagreements as the issue of access to abortion services. Abortion is a deeply personal issue, and it is normal to have strong feelings on all sides.
At Room One, we support a wide range of community members accessing all kinds of services that relate to reproductive health. It is our steadfast commitment to share information, offer support, ask guiding questions, and walk alongside each community member without judgment. We know we are doing our job well when people from all backgrounds and beliefs feel safe coming into our building asking for support.
Since our founding in 1998, Room One volunteers, staff, and board members have been committed to working against intergenerational poverty and violence. Unwanted pregnancies impact a woman’s educational attainment and income earning capacity, and increase vulnerability to violence.
For these reasons, Room One focuses on prevention and advocacy work, such as:
- Increasing access to reproductive health care, condoms, pregnancy tests, and emergency contraception.
- Providing education in the schools regarding healthy relationships, the importance of consent, information about birth control options. Through these lessons we see a reported postponement of sexual activity and increased use of birth control.
- Working with Family Health Centers, and other Title X receiving clinics, to ensure teen-friendly, safe and affordable reproductive health care services are available.
When it comes to supporting community members with their own decisions about an unwanted pregnancy, client advocates listen deeply and make connections to resources that will support the client in their own decision making. Two of our core organizational values - dignity and self-determination - ask that we honor and respect each individual and the choices they are making.
Above all, Room One stands with all people - men, women, gender nonconforming, transgender - who seek support or access to reproductive healthcare.
