New Suicide and Crisis Line: 988

A call or text to 988 will get you to a network of trained counselors who can offer support for those in crisis or who are supporting someone else who is struggling.

Mental health access got a boost with a big change nationally from a hard to remember 10-digit suicide support line to a simple three numbers. Now, a call or text to 988 will get you to a network of trained counselors who can offer support for those in crisis or who are supporting someone else who is struggling.

You can use 988 if you are having:

- Thoughts of suicide
- Mental health crises
- Substance use crises
- Any other kind of emotional distress

You can also use 988 if you are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.

According to the National Council for Mental Well-Being, 90% of people get what they need from the phone call or text. Just reaching out, having a supportive ear, knowing they are not alone makes a difference. For the remaining 10%, the counselors on the line work to get the person connected to in-person services.
